all the sites, and a stupendous finish of some awesome aerial night
shots of the fair. So sit back and enjoy the visits to the pavilions,
rides, restaurants, great architecture, and more. Come join us
for over an hour of New York World's Fair history.
We start with the 1964 New York
World's Fair Report (1961), which run 27 minutes. Since I grew up in
Queens, New York I particularly enjoyed this one as it gives an overview
of what went into transforming Flushing Meadow for the 1964-65 New York
World's Fair The background information on how much time is needed to put
a World’s Fair together is fascinating. We get to see the all the
preparation, planning and construction for the Fair, which was done under
the direction of Robert Moses.
Next we see The Unisphere:
Biggest World on Earth (1964). Where for a wonderful 14 minutes we get a
great overview regarding the construction of one of the main attractions
of the 1964 World’s Fair, the Unisphere. It’s a wonderful tribute to often
overlooked monument. It showed a real marvel being constructed. We get to
see a very fascinating look at the concept and creation of a this very
unique sculpture.
Then we are off To The Fair (1965) and for 26 minutes we are taken
on a trip to the New York World's Fair of 1965. This is the one I got to
see as I grew up in Queens, New York and I must say it was fantastic
getting to relive it all again. This is a must see for all, as you not
only get to discover every aspect of the fair but the 60s feel too. So for
those of you wondering what the 60s were like, this will give you a good
look see. Follow the family of five, the couple from India, the two women
schoolteachers, the three Boy Scouts, and others as they take it all in.
If you are a Disney fan, you will also enjoy the Disney attractions - the
Carousel of Progress, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, It's a Small World,
even those dinosaurs you see from the railroad) as they were developed and
built for the fair. The movie also includes footage of the General Motors'
Futurama II ride that you see in the 1939 film “To New Horizons”, you can
do some comparing if you want. This is also the fair that Thomas Hine was
cited as marking "the end of Populuxe”.
Last but not least are some awesome aerial night shots at the New York
World's Fair. I am especially fond of the fountains, the New York Pavilion
and Shea Stadium (one of my favorite places).
So sit back and enjoy the visits to the pavilions, rides, restaurants,
great architecture, and more.
