Of Listening Enjoyment
Warning, this show is addictive. The most popular show of its kind in the
history of radio. During its fourteen-year-run on radio,
Vic and Sade, won
numerous awards and were atop the ratings for many years running. According
to Time, Vic and Sade had 7,000,000 devoted listeners in 1943. For the
majority of its time on the air it was presented in fifteen minute episodes
without continuing plot. From June 27, 1946 to October 26, 1946 the shows
were presented in 30 minutes weekly episodes. In July of 1949, on Monday
nights there were three ½-hour episodes for television. In the Spring of
1957 there were seven 15-minute episodes for television on Thursday night.
The show featured the three voices of the main characters only but their
world was peopled by countless characters with whom the listener became
intimately acquainted. When the actor who played Vic became ill, a second
male character, Uncle Fletcher, was added to the cast. And, when the actor
who played Rush was called into service during WWII, another young voice was
added to take his place.
The central characters, known as "radio's home folks," were accountant
Victor Rodney Gook, played by Art Van Harvey, his wife Sade played by
Bernadine Flynn, and their adopted son Rush, played by Bill Idelson. The
three lived on Virginia Avenue in "the small house halfway up in the next
block." The program was presented with a low-key ease and naturalness, and
Rhymer's humorous dialogue was delivered with a subtleness that made even
the most outrageous events seem commonplace and normal.
Additional cast members included: Uncle Fletcher played by Clarence
Hartzell, and Russell Miller played by David Whitehouse. Some of those
unvoiced characters were Bess and Walter, Sade’s sister and her husband and
Fred and Ruthie Stembottom enjoyed playing Five Hundred with Vic and Sade.
Some of Sade's other friends include, among others: Mis' Brighton, Mis'
Trogel, and Mis' Appelrot. Others too numerous to include are Vic’s work
associates and lodge buddies, Rush's friends, Russell's friends, the
townsfolk and the neighbors.
The series was written by Paul Rhymer for the entire length of the program's
run, which ran steadily from 1932 to 1944, then again in 1945 and 1946, with
television stints in 1949 and 1957. Despite such high praise, 2000 disc
recordings of the show were destroyed just before 1940 and some 1200 have
been lost since that time. Today only about 330 original recordings have
survived. It is estimated that Rhymer wrote more than 3500 scripts for the
show.
One of those fun tidbits we all love, is the town in which Vic and Sade
lived. It is unnamed, but is actually a vaguely fictionalized Bloomington,
Illinois.
You have over 320 episodes and over 55 hours, so sit back, relax, laugh,
reminisce and listen to the goings on in"the small house halfway up in
the next block."

listening pleasure.
