Gunsmoke was one of the long lived, classic Old Time
Radio shows that most folks know or at least recognize. If you're old
enough, you most likely remember it from radio. If you're a bit younger then
us, then you probably know the show from its move to early TV where it ran
for about 20 years. In the TV version James Arness played the role of Matt
Dillon, although the role was originated on radio by William Conrad, who
brought a harder edge to the character.
Gunsmoke was respected for its high acting values, not only by the main
characters, but by the smaller bit players as well. It first aired on the
CBS network in 1952. It was presented as the first adult western, although
there are those who would argue that description. The show was set in Dodge
City, Kansas in the 1870's.
The main character, Matt Dillon, was played on radio by William Conrad. In
1951, William Conrad played the lead in a show entitled Pagosa which was
believed to be an episode of the show Romance. He played the part of a
sheriff in a Western town. Although this was not considered to be a true
audition, the character was very close to the one envisioned for the Matt
Dillon character in Gunsmoke. This presentation is considered to be one of the
steps which eventually lead to the production of Gunsmoke.
Other regular characters were Chester Proudfoot, played by Parley Baer;
Kitty, played by Georgia Ellis; and Doc Adams, played by Howard McNear. On
the television series, Doc's first name was changed to Galen, and Chester's
last name was changed to Goode.
The series featured well-developed scripts and acting which set it apart
from many other Westerns of that era, in addition to many other scripted
shows then on radio, However, it was the realistic sound effects that
contributed to the authentic atmosphere of the show. If the listener applied
just a bit of imagination, you could
believe that you were back in the Old West.
If you enjoyed Gunsmoke on TV, you will love the early radio episodes. It
isn't often we get to see, or in this case hear, where some of our most
beloved TV shows originated. So many of the past episodes or entire series of these type of shows have
been lost that when the opportunity presents itself to listen to any of
these original series, you need to take
advantage of it.
These early radio presentations are true American treasures and are must
listening to for anyone who grew up in that era. For those a bit younger, it
is a window into how your parents and grandparents entertained themselves.
Remember, this was the time before most folks had a TV.
Here is the list episodes presented for your listening pleasure. Enjoy, I know I did.
