Amos n' Andy began March 19, 1928, as one of the first radio comedy serials, written and voiced by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll and originating from station WMAQ in Chicago, Illinois. After the series was first broadcast in 1928, it grew in popularity and became a huge influence on the radio serials that followed. The series began as Sam n' Henry (January 12, 1926), and was about two Alabama men who came to Chicago to find their fortunes. With it’s serial form, it was very popular, as listeners tuned in daily to follow the lives of both men. It was later changed to Amos n' Andy. Adapted to television, The Amos 'n Andy Show was produced from 1951 to 1953 with 78 filmed episodes. For 34 years Amos n' Andy have held a very singular place in the American old-time radio experience.

Initially, Gosden and Correll portrayed all the male roles. Between the two, they voiced over 170 distinct characterizations in the show's first decade. With the episodic drama and suspense heightened by cliffhanger endings, Amos n' Andy reached an ever-expanding radio audience. It was one of the earliest success stories of radio syndication, and at least 70 stations besides WMAQ carried the program using prerecorded records.

While Amos n' Andy was one of the most beloved and popular radio programs in the history of radio, it is also probably spoken of the least due to its very controversial connotations in today's society. This is unfortunate and ironic at the same time, since the series was a comedy. The series was often tagged "off limits" because the two characters are based on the minstrel blackface comedians that were so prevalent in Vaudeville. There were protests and criticisms by Abbott's Monthly, Bishop W. J. Walls of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and The Pittsburgh Courier published a petition to get the program pulled from the air, however the campaign was dropped.

As you will hear some of the sponsors of the show are very familiar today to many of us. Campbell soup, Pepsodent toothpaste and primary sponsors Rinso detergent, the Rexall drugstore chain and CBS' own Columbia brand of television sets. Calvin Coolidge was said to be a devoted listener.
